We sat down with our CEO, Karly Boast, to talk about what’s happening in the NZ job market now.

Right now, New Zealand’s job market is running at two different speeds at once. If you’re hiring for a generalist role, you’re seeing more applications and longer processes. If you’re hiring for a specialist role, you’re competing for a small pool of top talent at speeds that don’t look like a soft market at all.

Karly shares a great example:

“I sat with two different businesses recently who were hiring and had two different conversations.

One was hiring for a generalist role. They’d advertised the role and were overwhelmed by the amount of applications they received and didn’t know where to start.

The other was hiring for a niche specialist role and had no applications at all.

Two different markets, and two different challenges that require different approaches.”

Karly’s advice for businesses wanting to stay ahead? Know which lane you’re hiring in, and move accordingly.
