Assistant Accountant (contract)



About the Company

A strong brand name who work closely with the building industry who have operations across New Zealand. They are looking for a strong Assistant Accountant who is both willing and able to learn and drive improvements as they uplift their finance function. 

About the Role

This initial 3-month contract ensures critical financial continuity across peak trading periods while they search for the right permanent appointment. Offering $70,000–$80,000 pro-rata and 1 day WFH flexibility, this role provides immediate commercial impact and exposure to AI automation projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver accurate Profit & Loss statements for multiple businesses
• Manage fixed asset registers, balance sheet, and bank account reconciliations.
• Review daily accounts payable batches and authorise financial disbursements.
• Longer term the role will be helping with AI workflow automation initiatives. and other process improvements.

This role would ideally suit someone potentially with a few papers left before qualification looking to round out their commercial and systems skills with broad exposure.

• Proven background in core accounting, P&L preparation, and variance analysis.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel proficiency, including practical expertise using LOOKUP’s and ideally Power Query.
• High-calibre communication skills to partner with senior operational and finance leaders.
• Genuine interest in leveraging AI tools and automated financial workflow solutions.
• Agile and self-directed, ready to deliver results within a lean commercial environment.
