The Two Most Important Ingredients That Guarantee A Recipe For Success
If thriving in your career was a simple recipe, what two most important ingredients would you need?
The most critical components to building a successful business and career can be so elusive, but without them, failure is pretty much guaranteed.
In my career, I realised I want to focus my energies on helping leaders grow and accelerate in their career goals. I almost burst with excitement on thinking of the ways to help them achieve this. This is the key! Why do you ask?
Well, the answer is simple.
THE TWO MOST CRITICAL TRAITS THAT EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US NEEDS TO REACH OUR GOALS ARE:
So simple, yet so hard. What do these two ‘ingredients’ have to do with success?
Every successful person I have met, people doing what they love to do in the way they want to do it, have been driven by an unrelenting hunger to reach their goals and achieve their ambitions. It eats away at them, consistently and persistently. It has pushed them forward, picked them up from the set-backs and driven long hours, sacrifice, perspiration and unwavering determination.
But hunger is not enough! It’s like having a gin without the tonic. Eggs without bacon. See where I’m going with this?
The second ingredient you need is: resolve.
Napoleon Hill labels it as ‘self-discipline’. I prefer David Maister’s ‘resolve’. Whatever you call it, you will fail to achieve your goals without it. You need to do the simple things, do it consistently and with much thought and you will get to where you are going. You will perfect that recipe.
Now that you know what ingredients you need, will you do what needs to be done? Most people don’t because we all get distracted by ‘the issues of the day’. Or we just simply forget to get it done, or (and this is the worst one) we simply cannot be stuffed to get it done.
The very best thing about strategic planning is not the insights the process produces, rather it’s the thinking that brings invigorates resolve. The problem with resolving is that it can fail quickly unless you have your conscience checking in on you. This is where self-discipline plays a major role because that leads to habits, which leads to persistence and persistence ALWAYS delivers…..wait for it…..RESULTS!
SO HERE’S MY POINT:
Do you have any major goals you’re trying to achieve? Check in right this very second on your hunger for the outcome. Do you really, really want it? Is it burning away inside? Is your desire at the absolute boiling point? If not, can you ignite it? Yes!? Good – go forth and tackle those goals.
If your answer is no, then STOP! Come up with a new goal, something that really juices you.
Get focused on your resolve, your absolute determination to do what’s needed to deliver outcomes. Do what you need to do when you need to do it, even if you don’t feel like it. That’s self-discipline. And if you really want to achieve goals for your business, team or career, then make sure you have a conscience too. Someone checking in and pushing you to keep you on track.
Hunger and resolve: two inseparable must-haves for success. Mix these two together in the bowl of your career, bake at a passionate level and produce the meal that will satiate that internal hunger.
