Market Trends

3 October 2023

The economic outlook for the next 12 months, from +700 business people.

Where are we going?

With the election around the corner, there’s been a lot of chatter.

So, we surveyed the market to get their steer on:

  • The talent market
  • Hiring and retentions plans
  • The general outlook for NZ business.

Of the +700 respondents, here are some of the key findings around their economic outlook for the next 12 months.

It’s a game of wait & see

36% of respondents took a neutral stance.

Suggesting an uncertain or ‘wait-and-see’ approach – and, considering the upcoming election, this isn’t too surprising.

Optimism in the prevailing winds.

Most respondents (nearly 40%) were either somewhat or very optimistic about the next 12 months.

This suggests that despite the uncertainty, there’s a more positive than negative sentiment simmering out there.

Small but mighty

What was encouraging was the optimism among SME businesses.

Those in the 10-20 and 21-50 employee range registered an optimism level 8-12% higher than the average.
