Finding roles in the hidden job market

After a tough few years for businesses and the economy, we’re seeing encouraging signs of recovery. Business confidence is returning and growth is on the horizon, we’re seeing an uplift in more opportunities opening up in the job market.
Whether you’re actively looking for your next role or not, this is a great time to set yourself up for what’s ahead. One of the smartest ways to do that is by understanding the “hidden job market”. These are opportunities that never get advertised but are filled quietly through networks, referrals or proactive outreach.
So how do you tap into that hidden market and put yourself in the running for jobs you won’t find on SEEK, TradeMe or LinkedIn?
1. “Your network is your net worth”
Networking doesn’t need to be formal and awkward. It can be as simple as reconnecting with a former colleague, messaging someone on LinkedIn or chatting to people at industry events.
So many jobs are filled through word of mouth referrals. The more people know you’re open to opportunities, the more likely you are to be thought of when something comes up.
Don’t just ask “Are you hiring?” Try saying you’re exploring new opportunities and would love their perspective or advice. It opens the door without putting pressure on the other person.
2. Let people know you’re open to opportunities
You don’t have to announce it to the world (and accidentally expose yourself to your boss and colleagues – whoops)! But quietly telling a few trusted connections that you’re open to new roles can make a big difference.
Many hires happen because someone says, “I know someone who might be great for this.” That “someone” could be you.
3. Put yourself on the radar (even if there’s no role yet)
Don’t sit back and wait for the perfect job ad to appear. If there’s a company you’d love to work for, reach out. Reach out with a brief, tailored message expressing your interest and what you could bring to the team.
Many companies will meet great people even if they’re not actively hiring – especially if the timing is right.
4. Stay active on LinkedIn
The more visible you are, the more likely someone will come across your profile or posts and think of you for an upcoming opportunity.
You don’t have to post every day. You can comment on posts, share your perspective or update your profile to reflect the kind of roles you’re open to.
All of the above will give you the best chance of being considered for opportunities before they’re even advertised.
