4 ways to use AI in your job search (without overusing it)
Whether you’re writing a CV, preparing for an interview or navigating your day to day role, chances are AI is already in the mix.
AI is evolving fast, and it’s changing how we work, learn, and grow. It’s also changing how people land jobs.
While AI can boost productivity and give your career a serious edge, like with any tool it works best when you (the human) stay in control.
Knowing how to use AI and when to step in with your own thinking is key to staying sharp, relevant and truly effective in your job search or career.
Here are 4 ways to use AI in your job search or career (without overusing it and losing the human touch):
1. Let AI help but don’t let it speak for you
AI can help you get started with writing a cover letter or reworking your CV. But don’t just copy and paste whatever it generates. As recruiters, we can spot a generic or overly polished AI written resume. Think of AI as your co-pilot, not your voice. Your final words should reflect your own voice, experiences and your personality.
2. Use AI to research fast (but make sure to fact check!)
Need a quick overview of a company or role? AI can be very useful to help summarise companies, trends or industry lingo. But remember: AI is not always accurate. Double check the facts, verify sources and make sure what you’re sharing or acting on is correct.
3. Keep upskilling (AI keeps evolving – and fast)
AI has already become part of the norm. Whether you’re in tech, finance, marketing or operations, you’ll likely be expected to use some form of AI soon (if you aren’t already). Learning how to use new AI or automation tools shows adaptability. Keep building your skills. It’s one of the best ways to stay relevant and future proof your career.
4. Being “human” can help you stand out
AI can’t replace you. It can’t replicate your voice, your experience or your perspective and it definitely can’t replace qualities like empathy, curiosity or the ability to genuinely connect with others. These are still essential in most roles and they’re what set you apart. So yes, use AI to handle the admin or speed things up but make sure what you put forward still sounds like you. Be authentic.
Remember: AI is here but you’re still in the drivers seat. Use AI as a tool to support you, keep learning and always bring your own voice to the table.
