Job Ref 3021866
Location Auckland South
Category HR
Type Permanent - Full Time
For those of you with a passion and reasonable experience in Health & Safety - this role will be ticking many of your boxes!

The Company.
McKay is one of those amazing kiwi businesses that is a humble success but you might not be aware of them.  Founded in 1936, McKay’s proud history is one of ambition, of good kiwi traits like respecting the customer, over delivering and to continually test the boundaries of what is possible.

Innovative and ambitious - this is an organisation that is leading the way in many and varied projects in New Zealand and abroad such as our first electric ferries, solar energy and key lighting projects.

Most succinctly described as a technology and engineering business, McKay has business segments operating in marine, industrial, infrastructure, process solutions, engineering & design and software solutions.  With customers like the NZ Defence Force, Refining New Zealand through to superyacht owners and construction companies, McKay is a diverse organisation with many, many opportunities for continued growth.

McKay was founded in Whangarei but has since grown to have extensive operations in Auckland, Waikato, and the Bay of Plenty. McKay is also an active exporter with a number of other subsidiary businesses including an active US subsidiary company.

The past few years have seen significant growth in the business segments and business opportunities - parts of their organisation are mature, and many parts are startup and they have numerous current opportunities.  Overall, the business is New Zealand’s best (and most successful) example of an innovative “start-up corporate”.

The Role.
This is a brilliant role for someone who wants to make a difference and create value in an organisation through the Health & Safety function.  The H&S function is in place and operational (it is a huge focus for the organisation to ensure employee and contractor wellbeing), but the purpose of this role is to take the organisation to the next level from an H&S perspective.

Reporting to the Group Human Resources Manager but working closely with the COO and Managing Director - this is a crucial role within the organisation and one where you will enjoy helping this growing thriving business to scale whilst ensuring leading edge Health and Safety function is in place.  This role requires travel - with current locations covering Auckland, Whangarei, Hamilton, the Bay of Plenty and Queenstown.

Good H&S processes are in place, but there is opportunity to optimise and to proactively enhance the Health & Safety function.  Your role is varied and includes
  • Health & Safety systems optimisation
  • Legal compliance and maintaining safe management practices.
  • Health & Safety reporting
  • Coaching and supporting employees around Health & Safety
  • Curating and enhancing the positive Health & Safety culture.
  • Managing subcontractor Health & safety requirements.
This is a full function role with leadership and enhancement opportunity which will be highly sought after in the market.

Your Background.
It goes without saying that this is a hugely exciting role and one where you’ll be motivated to make a difference and supportive this innovative business from a Health & Safety perspective.

You’ll currently be in a Health & Safety role - either as an advisor (and looking for a step up), or in a manager role and looking for a new challenge.  Experience is important, but this company strives for ambition and energy and someone who has the capability to engage the workforce and influence a positive Health & Safety culture.

Personality wise, you’ll be someone who can adapt to different cultures and environments, but what is key is your resilience, tenacity, enthusiasm, confidence and leadership ability.  You’ll be an influencer, someone who is supportive but also is ambitious about creating and enhancing a leading H&S culture.

Because of the industries that McKay is involved in, any prior experience in the electrical or construction industries would be useful (but not vital).  What is important is a good understanding of Health & Safety, and the smarts and ambitions to be the person to lead the function in this growth organisation.

You'll be someone who enjoys working in growth environments, you’ll be adept at working with people from different backgrounds - you’ll be a relationship builder and someone who is positively focused - ambition and energy are key.

There are very few H&S roles with organisations like this.  This is a career-defining opportunity for someone special.
